Planting in the rain?

Hi,

First of all, I'm new here so nice to meet you all.

Couple of questions from a complete newbie.

I have a couple of 35 litre grow bags and waiting on my starter kit, free with this months magazine subscription.

I also have strawberry, tomato, lettuce, basil, pepper and rocket seeds.

Is it okay to plant these seeds in current weather here in 'sunny Wales' ie in the rain?

Are you planning on planting inside or out? It is too cold for any of these to germinate successfully outside yet, whether it is raining or not! If you are going to plant them outside then some protection from the rain would stop them becoming waterlogged and the seed being washed to the edges of the pot.
Strawberries will take a couple of years to get to fruiting size from seed.

As Wendy says, its a bit cold at the moment to start these off outside - most of them I would start indoors in pots or seed trays whatever the weather.

You should be ok to start them all of indoors then slowly let them get used to the outdoor climate by putting them outside for short periods until the weather warms up a tad. I would ditch the strawberries & buy some runners instead. Even better if you know somebody with some spare.

Was looking forward to having some strawbs to pick :-) Never mind, I may start some anyway, two years time then I'll have some to eat! I will pick some runners up on my way home.

I know aldis are doing runners in trays of 6 at the moment for a couple of quid, I wouldn't be surprised is coop or asda are aswell. How far do you travel for work butt, down the valley or up it? Don't tell me where, I just might be able to help as I've got to clear up my strawberry beds, and I'm chucking runners onto the compost at the moment.

I only travel down to ASDA area for work. Will pop into ASDA for a look tomorrow as I'm down Pandy in the morning. :-)

No problem butt, I'm a bit too far to make a special journey, not worth the fuel see. Might be worth asking in your local allotment site though, those that didn't dig up in the autumn will be clearing their beds around now, you might pick up some freebies.
