  • Planting in my weed area

    Hi,
Have got two beds in my new plot with horse tail and suckers from a tree coming up.
These two beds are quite a big area. So was wondering if I cleared it would I be better doing a crop that takes little time say for example salad bits or do something that takes it time but needs plenty of room so I can weed through it say sprouts or cabbage?
    Any ideas anyone?

You need to pull up the suckers & all the horsetail as it appears. You'll need to grow something that's taller than the horsetail to shade it out.,

That's what I was wondering. Might do my beans there and do short rows by going across the plot in short blocks to limit the light to it. Then I can still weed it out up the paths.
      Thanks for the advice

and underplant them with pumpkins. Even if you don't eat the pumpkins, the foliage is terrific ground cover

Thanks for that. Never thought of pumpkins. Never grown them before and I quite fancy pumpkin pie and the kids would love to carve one.

There are 100s of different sizes & colours. I like the softball sized ones: perfect for microwaving, stuffed with melty cheese

Am going to look about next week and see what I can find. Bed area is quite big so could possibly try a couple of types.

Do you have any seeds to swap, NVG? The virtual seed parcel has over 30 varieties of pumpkin and squash available

I personally would opt for soft fruit with a fruit cage around them. The roots will out compete the tree suckers and the marestail shouldn't have too much affect on the soft fruit. An organic or inorganic mulch would be beneficial also.

PS You could put your pumpkins around the soft fruit and use the leaves as a mulch.
