Just planted my first strawberries

Looks fab! I've just done mine today in a planter my hubby made from an old pallet but it won't let me upload a picture :-(

Oh I would of loved to see that mines darselect variety.. What's yours?

A bit of a mixture in honesty. Because it's an old pallet, it's got three layers. The bottom layer is plants from last year but I've no idea what kind. The middle layer are new ones I bought this year but the label blew out so again, no idea. The top layer are pine berries which are white strawberries that apparently taste like pineapple! Should be interesting!

Hope you didn't mind me flipping the pic............. You really don't need straw, it's normally used to keep the soil off the strawberries at fruiting time, as yours are in a basket you shouldn't get much.

I think mine are Elsanta. Sorry to hijack the thread but I wanted to ask what other people do with their strawberry plants at the end of the season? I hear a lot of people say that they get new plants from runners which I have done in the past but sometimes I just leave the old plants over winter, trim them in spring next year and I always get a decent crop off them again. Anyone else do this or is it just me?

They usually crop for 3 years, Moop and you should try to keep up a rotation of plants by bringing on a new set of runners each year to replace the 3rd year plants.

Good idea, I did get a few runners last year but I also bought new plants this year so as long as I get a few runners every year I should be ok. Thanks
