As long as you don't eat the seeds (as they may have been treated) you're OK. Just snip off the leaves as you would normally.
With sprouting seeds you eat the seed as well as the shoot and its then that you need to have "safe" seeds.

Ah great, thanks. It's leaves I'm interested in primarily. Thanks VC
Is there anything that isn't made better by half an hour pottering in the veg patch?

This was what they had in Morrisons this morning - any good? If not I'll use them for cooking so I haven't lost anything.

I sow cut and come again salad mix in small seed trays, do 2 trays that way when you've used the leaves on one you can use the 2nd tray whilst waiting for new leaves to grow in the 1st tray.

Puy lentils are nice as sprouted seeds you get loads in the packet as well.

What a great thread! I have loads of pulses in the cupboard, as well as tonnes of salad seeds, so will definitely be trying this.

If I do use seeds, how thinly should I sow them, and what depth of compost should I use? Assuming I use compost that is - I tried sowing some cress seeds on kitchen paper but they didn't do very well.

And how would I go about sprouting peas, lentils etc? I.e. what medium and method would I use?

                  Thanks

Indigo I just filled a plastic tray with MPC (it was a tray that had had PSB in it in the supermarket) and stuck some pea seeds into it quite thickly. Then for variety I then sprinkled a handful of mixed herb seeds on top (I have a load that fell out of some packets and are completely mixed up). I watered it and put it on the window sill. Things are starting to happen already

I now have at my disposal an A4ish mushroom box, so I'm going to do the same but with spinach and other leaves.

Agree with MrsC, as only using shoots for eating you can sow quite densely. I use plastic mushroom trays for my peas and start a new tray every couple of weeks.
When we were kids we used to sprout cress seed on cotton wool, usually in an empty egg shell to look like hair. Can other seeds be sprouted on cotton wool?
