Spuds - why aren't they sprouting

Hi,
I,ve had an allotment now for about a month and three weeks ago, I planted some seed potatoes, but there is no sign of them breaking the soil yet, is this normal?

They will be coming through any day now, so keep an eye open and cover them up if we get the cold nights forecast at the end of this week.

As for your spuds - depends on how deeply you planted them, whether they were chitted or not and the climate where you live

Oh I remember this time last year

I got my allotment and put in my potatos

I was so excited waiting to see what happened

Last year everything was late due to the cold weather

I didn't know what was a potato and what was a weeds coming through

I clearly remember asking my site rep when he was passing if something was a potato or weed and then he looked and showed me 3 tiny potaoe tops pushing through

I was so excited. He was really chuffed too actually

If as predicted we are to have a cold snap then thank your lucky stars they haven't come up yet. But sure as God made little green apples they will be up soon.

I've got tatties in beds where some are 18" tall whilst others in the same bed have yet to show their faces.

Like you I got my allotment a month ago and straight away got potatoes in. I had a look yesterday and could see some green coming through but can't tell if it's the potatoes or weeds. I put some onions in last weekend and would like to put some strawberries in next weekend.

Hi HillGorilla and welcome to the Forum from me as well. Don't be biting your fingernails waiting. They may take some time to break surface yet but that is absolutely normal. It depends on soil temperature, moisture etc and of course you say they weren't chitted either before planting. That by the way is not a problem, they absolutely do not need to be chitted before planting but it will take longer for them to break surface if not chitted. I was busy planting spuds yesterday. .

Hi I read your question and even remembered to check down my plot for you
I planted some main crop on the 11th of April and they have just started to appear. They weren't chitted at all I just dug a hole and put them in.
You can't rush nature I'm afraid. My first and second earlies were put in on 1st of April and first shoots appeared on the 12th April. So they have a habit of doing things in their own time.
