sweetcorn?

anyone got any tips for starting off sweetcorn? i planted some seeds a little while ago but got nothing now i am reading about chitting them first? and some telling me to soak them has anyone any ideas to help? what works best

I just shove mine in roof trainers and off they go, would be worried about rotting if I soaked them but you could chit them on damp kitchen roll.

I got lucky, all mine were started in an unheated propagator and were up quick as a flash, they are now ready to go out in the garden

You could also sow them into toilet rolls. Were the seeds in date?

i will try chitting some on some damp kitchen roll i wasn't sure about soaking them either Alison, Yes Kathy seeds were bought couple of months ago and say use before jan 2015. thank you all for the quick response will let you know how i get on

I planted some in modules in unheated propagator, popped in airing cupboard, for few days, and every single one has germinated, and they are now about 2 inches high and looking v good. No soaking, nuffinck

unfortunately Dorothy i don't have an airing cupboard have set some on some damp kitchen roll to see if i can germinate them its the only thing i have started that haven't come up glad yours are looking good

I sowed sundance and swift, the sundance struggled to germinate 50% for some reason, the swift managed 100%, Same for both types, soil, temp, watering etc. Both were in date. Sometimes one just has to put it down to anything but my fault.

I use an old ice-cream tub, holes pierced in the bottom, nice and deep for the roots, then sow and cover with cling film until the shoots show when I remove it.
Makes a mini-propogater, sits on my kitchen table to keep warm.

i have ordered a heated propagator but as yet it hasnt arrived so i am going old school lol
