  • B&Q Buckets... what for?

Can you let me know what exactly could be grown in these?

Its opened up a whole bigger plot for me!! (for next year now!)

    Look forward to suggestions...

Spuds, courgettes, tomatoes, peppers, cucumbers, aubergines, just about anything that makes a single substantial plant but doesn't get 8' tall. Your imagination is probably the limit.

Is there a special secret to the B&Q ones? I've seen lots of people mention them and am wondering if they have miraculous properties!?!

No special secret just the fact that they are 98p for a 10litre bucket, a good size and shape with that and of course easy to get hold of.

They are much cheaper than a similarly sized plant pot and just need drainage holes drilled.

Thanks! I have some ordinary black builders buckets but I want some jazzy orange B&Q ones now too, lol!

I use loads of 10litre flower buckets to grow all sorts in - they are 99p for 8 in Morrisons and I believe some Asda stores give them away free.

Many thanks for ideas... this will give us more growing space in our small plot.

I'm trying to persuade OH that buckets all over the garden look jazzy - so far he's not convinced lol!

You could spray them another colour. I bought some large boring black planters from Morrisons and spray painted them purple. I really like them but the OH doesn't! I'm thinking of doing it with the morrisons flower buckets as they are just black as well and I still have some spray paint left over.

I did it to get some bright colour in the front garden as all my pots last year were either black or terracotta coloured which was just dull (most of the actual terracotta pots have now been painted blue or yellow).

I actually bought a couple of B & Q buckets with the intention of growing carrots in them but I've found them really handy for general use round the garden - mixing compost, gathering weeds in etc, I may give one over to carrots but I will be keeping at least one in tact.

I have been and bought five this morning

Tell you what though, I bet even Alton Towers can't rival the adrenalin packed thrill rush that is getting to an out of town warehouse on foot! I think I need to lie down in the greenhouse for a couple of hours now!

I am about to have a go at putting a courgette in one.

One appears to have been taken over by lego which i will have to class as a loss now I think.

Put some compost in with the lego - it might grow!

Lego breeds on its own anyway. Could never get over how much I used to find underneath the settee when the boys were young.

OK back to buckets.... I presume I need to put holes in the bottoms?? for drainage? Or not??? to hold moisture!

Just brought 10 from B&Q... had nice orange ones on trolley... then OH spotted the black ones and insisted on swopping them So put an orange one back on trolley when he wasn't looking - for my dead-heading/weeding

Also - just brought some swede and dwarf broad bean seeds... potted 4 beans and on windowsil now awaiting sprouting

And to add to my perfect start to the weekend - had first few new potatoes and you REALLY CAN taste the difference! (Alongside homemade chicken pie and flat beans - sorry from Sainsburys!)
