Planting broadbeans in Oct or Nov

I have a packet of broad beans (Jubilee Hysor). It says on the packet that they can be planted out in Oct or Nov.

Does that mean they'll grow over the winter and I'll be able to harvest in spring? Or does it mean that they'll begin to germinate and grow n the spring?

I really don't know what to expect.

It means if you sow in October they'll grow over winter, slowly at first, and then quickly around March and April. You'll be able to pick them around May.

We sow every November. We've been eating this year's crop for about 3 weeks. Don't be tempted to sow too early as the plants get too tall and if there's any substantial snow, the weight of the snow can snap the stem. What you're aiming for before the bad weather arrives are plants about 4-6 inches high.

They'll overwinter quite nicely. If we get a really bad winter and they bite the dust, you can still sow in Spring and be eating beans by mid-June, so might as well have a crack.

We do the same with peas too (Douce Provence) then sow a maincrop in early spring.

I'm harvesting my November sown BBs now, so they aren't fantastically early. Nothing grows much in the dark cold days of winter: the BBs will just sit there until the days lengthen in March, then they take off

The plants do end up a bit tougher than spring sown ones, so are possibly a bit more resistant to blackfly
