Thought the roots (dandelion in particular) would occupy too much soil space, take a long time to die.....and I have dug up whole green plants several inches under the soil, much to my puzzlement, expecting the photosynthesis 'rule' to be inviolate!
But like I said, am willing to give it a go, thanks.

Dandelions are incredibly tough, they hold on to a semblance of green colour well past all other weeds but no sun = no photosynthesis . (that's a big full stop there).

I once found a dandelion under a corrugated sheet, that had been down all winter, which was pure white but had a full collection of leaves and a flower head presumably all pushed out from the food stored in the roots.
