Aquarium gravel.

Hi,
Can I put aquarium gravel at bottom of pots to aid drainage?
If so how deep should it be in a 30cm(ish) size pot?
Or
Can/Should I mix it in with compost/soil?

Probably no help at all but,Mrs.BB adds it to the soil in her cactus pots & they seem happy enough

At this time of year I would be trying to conserve moisture rather than aid drainage therefore I would put a layer on top of the compost as a mulch.
