"They" say that strawberry plants last for 3 years then you should replace them. I've had some of mine for much longer than that but they do start to become less productive. I make new plants from runners and from time to time buy new ones. Am going to take the whole load out later in the year as they are under a tree which will have to be cut down ....that will set them back a little.
Protect from slugs and snails .....i use pellets....and from birds with netting.

You are supposed to be able to keep your plants for three years before they run out of steam and produce fewer or smaller fruit, however I've seen good stuff coming from plants six years old!
In the meantime, plant out some runners (baby ones that the mother plant throws out). There are several ways to do this, have a Google!
Change the planting location when you plant them out.
A straw mulch is good to keep berries off the soil, rots down well, slugs and snails don't like it.
Sorry to repeat, other post not there when I started!Last edited by Raybon; 14-06-2014, 08:09 PM.

Do you mean perennial? If so yes they are. You will get a small crop in year 1, better crops in years 2 and 3, dwindling after that. Most people replace them after the third year but you can keep them if they are still cropping well. They will produce plenty of runners which you can use to make new plants. Ideally you'll have a mixture of first, second and third year plants (I'd keep them in separate rows so I know which is which.) then you won't have to replace them all in one go.
They are generally pest free plants but blackbirds and slugs and snails love the fruit.
