  • Pea problem

I have 4 rows of different peas and in 2 of them some of the plants have withered away. Any ideas what causes this? Or is this normal and you always loose a few?

My first early sowing of peas 'Kelvedon Wonder has now finished and the plants have turned brown with old age. My second sowing are in 3 inch pots and will be planted out next week.

First I would check the bottom of the plants, could it be slug damage or maybe caught with the hoe?
My experience is that once away, peas are pretty tough, I lost a lot last year with mildew though so this year I have a more resistant variety. But that effected the lot not just odd plants.

My neighbour has a "bad" row of peas, and also "bad" patches of potatoes. It's due to many possible things:

        - planting out at the wrong time (eg. might be too cold, or too dry)
        - they might be in a particularly dry bit of soil
        - there might be ants' nests, whose tunnelling disturbs the roots & eventually can kill the plant
        - cutworm will sever plants at the root
        - as will a clumsy hoe
        - peas don't like drought at all. All our peas are going over now, at variable rates

This is now spreading along the other rows. Have been googling and it seems a fungicide may help. Any recommendations ?
