Pricking out and troughs question

Ok... daft question time again!

What exactly do you all mean by pricking out???

And when you talk about troughs... what do you mean? I have images of horses having a drink!?

Well your not far out Noidea, Troughs are the long planter ( bit like a freestanding windowbox) as opposed to Tubs whick are like big pots.

As to pricking out, this is when you take the germinated seed that you've sown and replant it in another container ( small pot or seed tray). I sow alot of my seeds in 3" half pots ( they're short one like the always put Pot Mums in) or half trays (unless I've got a lot to sow then I'll use full size trays) and when they've grown a bit you carefully lift them out using either a plastic Widger or an old for with some of the prongs removed and then replanted to give them more space to grow. The if needed You can pot them on ( put them in then next size pot up) to give them more room.

Ahhhh ok! So if you shoogle a seedling to loosen the soil a bit, then use your widger type thing it should work???

Yes, but dinna fertle, and keep the dibber in the cupboard, noidea ! And be careful to handle the seedlings by the leaves and not the stems, as the stems are very easily crushed and this is fatal...
