Feeling very behind!

Is it just me?

I have nothing even remotely edible yet, either indoors or out. Most of my plants (all varieties!) are less than 6" tall, with no flowers on them even. I didn't sow anything much until the end of April (when I was given a greenhouse). So am I at about the right sort of stage?

I've been telling myself I'll have things later in the year instead of right now but I feel a bit like a child who's missed a crucial point in a lesson and can't understand why everyone else seems to be doing so well!

Claire, I have flowers on half of my broad beans and some very small, very green strawberries but that's about it. Everything else is at the same stage as you - courgettes just growing their third leaves, potatoes only been earthed up once, lettuce, french beans, cauli and spinach about the size of my thumb ..... we'll catch up over the summer hopefully!! I always was a slow developer I reckon ...

I have just celebrated the first flower appearing on my peas. I have flowers on tomatoes and strawbs starting to ripen but nothing else is ready to eat yet. The only thing which is in full production is a chilli plant which I overwintered. Don't panic, you are not alone!!

When all the clever clogses courgettes have run out of steam and they've eaten all their peas and strawbs, THEN you can laugh! Panic not - things catch up.

I am at the same stage as you with some things too. Don't worry! I have noticed lots of people talking about 2nd sowings of things too around now so I think we will catch up!

managed a couple of radishes and a bit of rocket so far but everything else else is still in te developmet stage

Feel I have missed the starting gun too!

Had to dig over the raised bed before I could plant, then my sweetcorn sowings failed miserably and the parrot ate my squash seedlings!

Have just sown a whole new packet of sweetcorn and they have almost all come through (with a little help from a reptile heatmat)

Picking up some established tom plants from a kindly freecycle member tomorrow.

Good luck with your crops and I'm sure you'll catch up - it's gonna be a long hot summer!

Don't worry! Lost all the early lettuce to slugs, the broad bean are c**p, the cabbage looks like lace and none of the carrots have made it!

You're no further behind than most. Some people like to get an early start, which is fine if you live somewhere warm, but generally speaking, you are right in there with the rest of us. I have nothing ready for eating yet, and I'm growing veg for a living !!!!

Do not worry every year I am behind everyone else. This is because my garden doesn't get as much sun as everyone else... it comes late. Because of that I know things always catch up. Just keep persisiting to keep them alive and all will be well.

Hello Seahorse, it's not a race. What you have will be fine. If you want to extend the season, keep a note of when you planted what and how it did. Could you have planted any sooner ? If the answer is no, then that is the best you can do in your climate. Enjoy. And it just means you can go on holiday in May without abandoning plants.

Slugs have eaten EVERYTHING!
Except broad beans, but those are now over (autumn sowing). I'm eating spuds every day, had a coupla strawbs, coupla peas, coupla radishes... chard is coming on strong

It's very nice to know I'm not alone Alice is so right, it's not a race! On reflection, I think gardening is much more about the journey than the destination for me anyway
