Horse Manure

My local stable provides free bags of Horse manure mixed in with sawdust and straw.

I know it needs composting but im not sure what I do.

Do I mix it in the regular compost bin with everything else or is a better to create a separate ones just for this?

I have a separate pile of HM that I keep covered with an old tarpaulin until it's rotted down to my liking.

Add it in layers or create a huge pile. Or both. Depends how much room you have. Do they have any well rotted stuff?

Personally I just bung it all in the daleks along with the green stuff and paper shreddings.

I have dedicated spaces behind my greenhouses where nowt grows, for a year or so, but I also add fresh stuff to the daleks to help the process.

Wish I could get some round here, although there seems to be loads of stables but no manure going spare .........

Just check where the horses have been grazing that the field has not been sprayed with weed killer as this can pass through the horses system into your plot.

Someone will explain in detail as they pick up this thread.

I feel your pain

Although some on the Allotment get a heap - it costs about £20 when I asked them a couple of years ago.

Where there's muck there's brass I suppose.

Just check where the horses have been grazing that the field has not been sprayed with weed killer as this can pass through the horses system into your plot.

I think this is why it's hard to get hold of nowadays - because they can't guarantee that the manure is safe to use

Can I just ask a quick question on horse manure. Can I put it on my new beds fresh and leave it over winter. There is nothing in the beds at the moment. I won't be putting anything in them till next spring.

Yep - that's what I do with the next-years-potato-beds. Stick a layer as deep as you like on the bed, and just leave it be. The worms will incorporate the muck, then I just plant the spuds in a hole made with a broom handle (or bulb planter).

The only beds that wouldn't benefit from this is those which you will have as roots next year - all others will be fine.

Can't do that at our allotments, its against association rules . . . any manure put on the allotment has to be covered/dug in.

Are you on a privately owned site, Raptor? There's nothing in the rules and regs about this in the Birmingham Council run sites, as far as I am aware.

If you spread it over your plot you are OK, just don't leave it in a heap uncovered.
