  • Using old net curtains

Hi all,I remember my dad using old net curtains to keep the birds of his raspberry bushes, can or could you use them to stop example, carrot flys and all the little insects from eating some of the veg you are growing in containers, or will it stop the veg from growing.
Hope this is not a stupid question ??

No reason why not, the light loss will be negligible compared to the advantages gained by protection from insect damage. Net curtains also give a slight protection from frost

These seem to be very popular amongst growers, 3mts x 2.8mts per curtain is a generous size for 5 squid.

Thanks York lady, I'd never considered using net curtains to protect things in the garden. I know a good supplier of net curtains ( my nan ).

Thank you small pumpkin,it feels good to be able to pass on something my dad passed on to me,even at the time I did not know it.
My dad grew the best veg,and even tho I am only going to have a go small,I hope in time my grandson could learn from me.

Just bought the net curtains recommended by BM earlier and they are great. LILL from Ikea - a massive amount of netting for a fiver.

Just annoyed my mother-in-law by measuring her nets!
What do you get if you divide the circumference of a pumpkin by its diameter?

My neighbour's plot and mine adjoin a large forested and moorland area, all summer long midges are prolific and are a plague of biblical proportions. They don't bother me but instanly zoom in on my neighbour driving him indoors immediately. Lately I see him wearing beekeeper type headgear made from a wide brimmed hat and a piece of old net curtain tucked into his shirt. It certainly seems to work
