  • B&Q Buckets... again!

sorry I did ask this under the original post but no response!

Do I need to put holes in my buckets - dear Liza? Or not?

    Holes - for drainage?
No holes to keep fluids in?

I'm presuming holes... but would like confirmation before we go drilling mad on our 'new' buckets!

    Thanks

Yup, drill some drainage holes or you will have a new garden feature in wet spells - buckets of swamp! I put some broken crocks or gravel in the bottom too to aid drainage

Ditto Shirl W-1, but if you can stand your bigger pots on blocks of wood or some bricks so the water can drain right away. I have had some lovely flooded pots in the past.

Don't worry, we've all done it!

Many thanks - I thought as such, and makes more sense as large brought pots have holes!! Just didn't want to waste 10 buckets if I didn't need to!

OK OH has a new job to do now.... get that drill out again!

I made the holes in mine with a pointy screwdriver. Less faffing with equipment (although a tad more brute strength required I suppose!).

With my buckets I made 4 holes half inch up from the base then filled the bottom with gravel. Read 'somewhere' that its good to have a reservoir.
Hope I did the right thing.

The other way is to stand your pots (with holes in base) on trays of gravel filled with water. Then you can monitor how much water your plants are taking up.

                    Yes, but so ... ORANGE!

BTW, put your holes in with a hot screwdriver, much easier (heat up on the stove)
