Building a small BBQ without cement - any tips?

Evening all,

I have managed to acquire some bricks and I wish to make a small, simple, non-permanent bbq/fire pit so I can cook some of my produce from the plot on the plot.

Anyone done something similar like this?

Any tips/advice would be most welcome!

All you need for a BBQ is a grill. Lay it over a brick or two for height. Charcoal underneath.

I've used an old spring form cake tin with a small grill over as a personal BBQ before now.

Much better than shop ones. Use lump wood charcoal, better in my experience!

We've used chicken wire folded over on itself before now!

Just check first it's OK with the site manager you can have BBQs...some sites have fire restrictions either all year, or at least during the summer months.

Our site frowns upon the use of BBQ's as one mans pleasure is anothers torment.so like Nicos says check first

You could google rocket stoves - all v simple and dismantle-able

4 rocks and an oven wire grid ... that's the way we used to BBQ when we were kids and went camping

When my brother was a student they made one from a shopping trolley. I am hoping yours will be a bit classier, but if you wanted something quick and simple and there just happened to be a stray metal shopping basket about....

just buy a weber charcoal BBQ.... well worth the money and they are not expensive

I BBQ at least twice a week (even in winter)... will be smoking a duck for christmas, and BBQ ribs for new year

you can use the weber as a smoker, and there are many forums (mainly from the USA) that discusses how to BBQ and smoke (proper)

if you try build a small bbq with a cheap budget, it most probably won't look good and perhaps cost as much as a good used Weber BBQ on ebay or gumtree

Yes, house bricks of the red variety are fired bricks and have already been fired at 1000 degrees Celcius so can stand the heat of a BBQ.

However, concrete bricks or breeze blocks are often formed chemically and cannot be heated. They can indeed fire off very large, very hot projectiles that can cause serious injury.

And certainly NEVER put the charcoal onto a man-made flag-stone or the same will happen (except much more often and much sooner!!!).

I've never had any problems using standard "commons". I think fireplace bricks are really only needed if you are doing some blacksmithing or something at much higher temperatures than you need to cook food.
