  • Tomatoes not ripening

I have been growing two types. Alicante and Roma. The Roma's are now ripening well. The Alicantes haven't even began to show any signs of turning red.

I know that the recent weather hasn't helped (cold). Any thoughts?

I don't have many Tom's turning red. Think I've only had 4 maybe 5, the same happened last year. I wouldn't worried about it. There's loads of time yet.

There's been quite a few threads on this lately (mine included) and the general consensus seems to be it's okay, there's plenty of time. So don't panic yet

My ones outside seem to be doing better than the ones in my greenhouse for some bizarre reason. Could be cause greenhouse is a plastic one.

Been fortunate here. Have had a glut of red vine ripened tomatoes so far this year, but still got plenty of green ones on the vines.

Blight has started to kick in this week (even with little to no rain about) and I've had to chuck several green ones due to getting directly infected at the small stems just above where the tomato grows and swiftly spreading to the toms themselves .

Don't know what the blight is like in your part of the country, but this week's cool weather seems to have helped it a lot. Pay extra close attention to the stems just above where the tomato grows and if you see a brown mark you might want to pull off the tomato immediately and let it ripen inside, because it could well be blight.

We get impatient like this every year, loads of time yet and it's amazing how well they'll ripen even when you have to harvest, usually have a few trays worth on window ledges finishing off into October at the least.

Some of us live in the past, always talking about back then. Some of us live in the future, always planning what we are going to do. And, then there are those, who neither look behind or ahead, but just enjoy the moment of right now.

Which one are you and is it how you want to be?

Patience grasshopper.......... If you're desperate to ripen them put a few in the fruit bowl with the bananas, the ethylene gas given off by ripe bananas triggers ripening in most fruits. You can also encourage bromeliads to flower by sealing up in a clear plastic bag with a ripe apple or banana for about a week.
