Onions from seed

Hi,
I have loads onion seeds. Haven't grown onions from seeds before but have read that it can take 44 weeks for them to be ready.
So if I start them off now in theory they should be ready July.
How easy are they to grow?
Is it best to sow direct or in seed trays first? Am thinking of the local squirrels being a pain in the bum again.

If you're going to start them off now you need a suitable variety and a bit of luck. There's some advice on the Realseeds site: Vegetable Seeds : Seed for Overwintering Cold-Hardy Onions
