    Jax
I'm in the same boat as LJ - Please don't let the next available date be before 27th May - cos what with the wedding et al, my future missus might get annoyed if I sneak home from honeymoon to plant my Runner beans and Climbing beans ! Then again, she might be glad to see the back of me for a while

The second window of opportunity for those who want to plant in conjunction with the moon is the Second quarter of the JUNE moon it starts on the 3rd and lasts for seven days, untill the 9th.
The control group can go in at any time other than the Second quarter.

Okay, I understand about the magnetic effects of the moon on water etc from my A-Level Physics, but I'm getting a tad lost now so sorry if this has already been mentioned...

Question: does the phase of the moon have anything to do with which way up my runner beans sprout? My first batch a few weeks back were perfect examples of runner beans. This lot (a second sowing from the same pack) all sown the same way up etc have all germinated upside down and are in the process of correcting themselves... Do you think it's got anything to do with bad timing in the Moon Gardening cycles?

The natural rhythms effect so much in this world that your beans could be effected too. What tells a bean which way to grow has intrigued school children in science for years. DNI Dave posted about a bean seed pinned to a wheel that was rotated as it germinated to show a beans ability to grow upwards.
Bean roots are so big that it is hard to miss them. It would be interesting to see a trial with beans planted one week apart for four weeks to see if it would happen again. Did you keep a record of the dates you sowed the beans?
We are in the first phase of the moon now and the water table is rising. The flow upwards started last Thursday on April 27th. Prior to that the water table was sinking. Last Wednesday it was at it’s lowest.
From the 5th of May, for seven days, the Second quarter of the moon will take the water table to its highest point on the Third quarter [Full Moon] and then it will start ebbing again.
I know a lot of people think stuff like this is new age and a bit hocus pocus but so was gravity in Newton’s day and the earth travelling round the sun was complete heresy in Galileo's day.
Any way if I wanted to do hocus pocus I could get my broom out and go dancing round my garden naked... oops perhaps not ...still to cold

Hi Jax, nahh... if you're anything like Terry Pratchetts witches, you wouldn't go in for that kind of things anyway

I'm annoyed as I didn't note down the date, but nxt year (if I remember) I will try that out - planting a week apart so it does have me intregued

Shortie it has nothing to do with the moon - half of my runner beans grew upside down and half the right way up. We must have planted them upside down.

You only need to worry when the moon is in uranus (as Patrick Moore often says)

LJ. Third quarter APR. 13. Water table at its highest and two days into going down on the 15th. The soil would have been nice and moist.

NTG. LOL ...did he sell you any tickets to the secret policemens ball?

Shortie. Granny and Nanny would never stoop so low. Well perhaps Nanny would have, when she was a lass. But thats a different story all together. It's all in the headology.

Absolutely... wiggling fingers in ears and all that... I see myself as more a well intended Magrat but often border on the Nanny side unfortunately

...anyway, where are my dried frog pills?

Jaxom, would like to join in the trial but have not put any bean seeds in yet. If you are planting out plantlets I suppose planting seeds at the same time will be ok? Should I put them into pots or straight out into the garden?

Am popping into town so will purchase some Blue Lake if I can find any.

                              In post #39 I wrote
As each platlet is planted in the ground to the outside of each stick insert a single Climbing French Bean seed 5cm deep as close as possible to the cane. This will extend your season and double the wigwam/frames productivity.
I understand from this that those who have not grown plants a month before could sow seeds instead.

Jaxom I now have two lots of broad bean plants ready to plant out. The moon gardening lot will be planted in the week commencing June 3rd but what about the second lot? What would be the worst date on the calendar to plant them out?
