  • Which of these gourds are edible?

    Afternoon everyone,

I planted some ornament gourds in addition to butternut squash and pumpkins I believe - trouble is I forgot to label them & I am not sure which is which so I was wondering if anyone can I.D. them all for me?

    Many thanks,

None of them look like definite pumpkins or butternuts to me. Any clue on what varieties you planted?

I don't think any of them will poison you but they may taste bitter or unpleasant.
Keep them separate next year - and labelled

Samuel! I had the self same packet of seeds, came from a magazine, but memory escapes me at the mo as to which mag it was!

But clearly remember it stating, not for human consumption!

Think the clue and key word being "Ornamental" .....................I wouldn't chance it!

I've seen the warty looking ones growing ornamentally in France. Beyond that I'm no help I'm afraid. Could you bake one of each and see how they turn out? Surely they wouldn't be harmful would they? Just maybe taste a bit foul?

Ornamental varieties can be eaten but normally do not have enough flesh to make it worthwhile.

Ornamental gourds are not edible as they have very little flesh and are grown mainly for show. The flesh they do contain is rather tasteless and may even be bitter.
Comes from Ornamental Gourds Information and Facts
The proof of the growing is in the eating.
