  • Buy tubers online advice - go by price of total weight or tuber numbers?

    Afternoon everyone,

I wish to buy some tubers online (Jerusalem artichokes amongst several) and I was wondering what to go by: the amount of tubers or the total weight of the tubers the sellers are selling?

    Thanks for your help,

    Samuel

    How big is a tuber...

I always buy spuds by number - I only want 20 in total - so I know how many of each type to buy.

I'd go by the weight. You can always cut a big tuber into 2 smaller ones if you want.

What fartickokes are you after? You are welcome to some fuseau and red boston they will soon multiply. I started with only three tubers of each

          I'm not fussed

This has prompted me to ask another question: where can I get these tubers from, in addition to others such as yams, oca, chinese artichokes etc?

I ordered 3 free seed catalogues and either none where in it or has a very limited (1 variety) selection.

@Norfolkgrey - thank you for your genorosity!

You can buy JAs in the supermarket when in season. They sell the smooth ones like Fuseau as they are easier to prepare. That's how I bought mine.

Have you tasted these veg? Are you after them because they are weird and wonderful and you want a few just to try or are you after lots to grow on a mass scale?

If its the first I can probably do all but yam, however I might be able to include red yacon. I am still to harvest most so unsure what the crops are like.

Last Spring I sow different Jerusalem artichokes, including some from Sainsburys that were reduced due to sell by date and they have produced a heavy crop. Our summer was awful, cold and wet, but we had a mild September and October.

If you only want a few JA tubes, Waitrose sells them 0.5 kilo for £1.75
