  • How far north can one grow Chayote outside

I have some shooting Chayote fruits which I was given by a lady in sunny Southern France last autumn. I thought I'd try planting them at my allotment but does anyone know if Bedfordshire is warm enough to grow them outside without having to over winter them inside?

Hi Emma, welcome to the vine. I hope that you enjoy yourself here.

It would appear that they are intolerant to frost so will need keeping in a frost free place over winter.

Here is a link with some info on them.

Welcome to the Vine Emma. Never heard of Chayote so I guess it's too far north to grow them here without considerable effort. But good luck for your adventure.

From each according to his ability, to each according to his needs.

Dont judge a plant by it's pot.

          Hi Greasyfire,

Do you grow them in pots to be able to bring them indoors? Are they quite hungry plants? From what I've read, they're pretty vigorous like squashes so I've been put off from planting any. But if they can fruit in pots...then...

Yeah they are very vigarous growers and just wrap around everything. They gro fastest when they are not in pots and slow growing down in cool tempertures. This week with all the wet rain i had the in my small unheated greenhouse but im thinking of mooving it to the bathroom since it is hot and humid. They need quite rich soil tu feuale there appetite. I havent got an idea of what the taste like and i herd you can eaat top of shoot in sald aswell as fruit and tuber of these.

for more info check this vid if found YouTube - How to grow Chayote Squash Vines
