  • red baron onions: what next?

    Hi all!
    I planted my red baron seeds on 30.12.14. They started to sprout about 10 days later. This is them today.


    What next??

    Do I need to let them continue to grow or put them in the ground??
    Very unsure about what to expext next! Thanks, helen x

      Not too much heat (13C max) ... plant out at 2-3 leaf stage around April.

        I'll disagree with Kirsten about Temperature. Onions need a minimum of 55f /13c to grow. They will sit doing nothing at a lower temperature though.

          Thank you. So more leaves will start to come through? Im worried the ones out already will get longer and start to flop over as a couple have already done! X

              I think they need supplemental light at this time of the year to have higher growing temperatures, otherwise all they have to achieve is three-ish proper leaves between now and end of March.

              The 13C max figure came out of my bible - Joy Larkcom's vegetable book - 15-20C for germination then drop the temperature. Clearly they will have warmer temperatures under cover come March, but light will be much better then too.

                Read the link provide by Norfolkgrey, it was written by an expert to get me through my first year of growing onions from seed.

                This was the result, largest onion just short of 4lbs. You wont' get anywhere near that with Red Baron but you will get a good harvest.
