  • Eco coco compact potting compost

Yesterday I bought a pack of Eco Block 50L coco comact potting compost from Home Bargain £1.79.
It states on the pack to add 15 liters of water to expand to 50 liters of compost.
    Has anyone used these before?
I was only going to use it in the hanging basket.
If they aren't very good i'm not too bothered as I didn't pay much.

It's good for mixing into soil, not sure it'll work alone as basket compost. I'd be inclined to mix some soil in with it for some extra body
IMO you'll definitely need some extra feeding after a month or 2 despite what it says on the label.

I found some good reviews for this product. I don't know if iv put that link up properly? But it's got 4.5 out of 5 stars,62 reviews. Also says you can use it to germinate seeds That's very good value, yes I'd add some plant food too or maybe test some in a little pot with some seeds? Looks ideal for potatoes-cheap & need tons of it....

I have some left over from last year - I think it is coir yes so nutritionally not great for most plants so I mixed it in with compost etc for potatoes in bags, they were happy bunnies. It needed feeding tho.

I have now opened the last pack, I have heard it is a great alternative to sphagnum moss peat for sowing sarracenia which I am about to do with 15 seeds I bought thanks to VC's 'cheap seeds' thread last month.

I was given a sarracenia for my birthday last month that needed potting on, which I did about a week or two ago, I shall see how that goes!

I mix it with compost when potting up but use it neat for sowing in. Toms and peppers popped up fine then to a mix and feed

              Thanks for the replies guys

I thought i would added extra compost in as well plus some feed.
Good idea using it for potatos. I've heard they need a lot of soil!

I just came on here to ask if anyone else was using this as I too was lured into parting with £1.79 for an 'expands to 50L' block. Texture wise I like it, although my initial thoughts were about the possible lack of nutrients.

I think it will have it's uses for me and agree with a lot of what has been said.

                - Mixed with last years spent compost and some bf'n'b
                - To add texture to my heavy clay soil
                - To mix with some disappointing grow bag (heavy/compacted crud)
                - To 'pad' anything out!

I am hopeful that it's moisture drawing properties might be useful in the summer?
