Sorry... more tomatoe questions

I have some gardeners Delight and some Alicante... unfortunately, I don't know which is which due to a very helpful son taking the tags out to pile up and play at shops.

Is there anyway that I will be able to tell the difference? (other than waiting on baby toms).. should they be treated the same as each other anyway?

I also wondered what I should be doing with them. I have sussed the side shoots thing, finally, but they all seem to be growing upwards yet not actually setting many trusses. i am not sure at which point they would do that. Some of them are about 4ft tall.

Any ideas would be much appreciated.

I treat both the same and stop the plants by nipping out the growing shoot just before they hit the greenhouse roof. When the tops are taken off the trusses seem to get bigger by the day. I feed with diluted worm tea every other watering although really the feed should not have as much nitrogen and more potassium but they seem to do OK.

It's the stuff that comes from the drain tap of a wormery, a good strong brew even if it does have a unique bouqet

noidea - don't worry too much. Treat both the same and they should be fine.

It's not unusual for some plants to get quite tall before showing their first truss. I think part of the reason is that many of us grow some tomatoes in hotter conditions than they really need and they grow up taller and thinner than is ideal. Most of us are stuck with the temperatures we have, however, so it's not easy to change this.

Some of my larger tomatoes were a good 2 and a half foot before I could see any sign of flowers. It's always been a problem, so I now try and grow more, shorter plants - I stop them after four trusses. It's not always easy to control tall tomatoes outdoors - my greenhouse is too hot for them to tolerate.

I have left for the moment but might stop them in the next week or so and see how they go. I do have signs of trusses coming on now and noticed that an alicante that I forgot about that is shorter, yet bushier has 6 baby toms!
