Leek Rust

  • Leek Rust

    Hi all,

    sorry if this is a really silly question…

    but if leeks have some leek rust (not too badly - just on some of the outer leaves which were discarded when harvested) is the rest of the leek still edible? Or do I chuck the lot?

    I'm no expert on leeks or any other veg for that matter but if it looks ok after peeling the bad stuff off then I would assume it's ok to eat...............note the word assume............

      Oh yeah, just rip off the outer leaves directly affected and munch away.

      As most of us who grow leeks will attest, rust is seen as an annoyance rather than a catastrophe. I get it every year without fail on almost all my leeks. I try and slow it down as much as possible, but it's inevitable with me I think.

        Yes we get it on leeks and garlic too. Just peel of the nasty bits, the rest is fine to eat

          Apparently neat vodka applied with a brush should prevent/slow development of rust. We're about to treat our garlic to this as we got hammered last year from end of May.

            I'm another advocate of cut it out/peel it back and scoff the rest.

            Never heard of the vodka application, FI (welcome to the Vine, btw ) but look forward to hearing how this works for you on your garlic. My initial thoughts are that I'd drink the vodka and cut the rust out the garlic, but I'm more than happy to be educated in this matter.

                  Was one of the guys from The Garlic Farm suggested it, we spoke to them last year at Gardeners World show. Sadly we've done it too late & started seeing spots on our Vallelado Wight bulbs this week.

                    I don't have any spare vodka for rust removing purposes! Never seem to find spare alcohol for reasons other than drinking it in our house
                    You may say I'm a dreamer... But I'm not the only one...
