Courgette Help

Hi all,

I have been browsing these forum for a few months now and they are a great source of information for a newbie.

But i have come across an issue that i don't seem to be able to find any answers on.

I have four courgette plants which have been grown from seed ,currently in my conservatory,i noticed this morning that there seems to be roots growing from the stem of the plant.is this normal ?

They are in 9cm pots and are about 20-25cm tall ,should i plant them into bigger pots ,but deeper so the new roots re covered ?

Hi Anthony and welcome to the Forum. Glad you've taken the big step and joined us
You can repot them up to the seed leaves. Those new roots will help the plant to grow stronger.

I made this mistake the first time I grew Courgettes, I had so many, I couldn't give them away for love nor money and people started avoiding me in the street in case I had some more to give away

You can never have too many courgettes

Not sure where abouts you are in the country (it would help if you were to put your approx location in your profile), but your Courgette plants may be huge by the time it is safe to plant them out if they are already ready for potting on from 9cm to, say, 1L.

On mild sunny days you could put them outside for the day, somewhere sheltered (they'll hate any wind, particularly if cold, whilst young and vulnerable). That will help to harden them up, ready for eventual planting out, but will also slow their growth down (compared to the lovely warm, wind-free, conditions in your conservatory )

I have quite a few elderly neighbours so any of the surplus produce will be going there way which i'm sure they will appreciate.

And i am a fan of courgettes so i don't think i could have to many

I have been moving them in and out ,they have been out about 6 times now and i will continue to do it when weather allows.

Should i be moving them into a slightly larger pot rather than say a 10 litre pot where they can really strive ? will this also help to slow the growth ?

I have 36 plants on the go. I love them. I hope I can manage to save some seeds of some variety this year because some of them are the last one that I have.

Mine are in the cloche and are already flowering! I've got four normal shaped and four round. My neighbours are going to love me...briefly! Then run away, as usual!

Well I love courgette and I love the flower and the leaves. I always grow more then I need. I plant them closer then usual and the last plant that will for flower and fruit I cut them to eat the full plant. In Italy people eat the plant and is a delicatessen especially the flower.

i thought i was mad with 12 plants. just because there are too many varieties, and i know the ladies love them if all else fails

Last year i had 12 plants and stopped counting when i over 200 courgettes, i use the flowers, let some grow to massive marrows and baby ones as well.


i would love to see a photo of your courgette patch when in full flower etc, one of my favourite plants so beautiful, love the leaves etc
