What veg to put in hanging basket

I'm wondering if there is a vegetable that suits being grown in a hanging basket....I've heard there is a trailing cherry tomato but would the fruit be too heavy?

No, their ideal for it , im growing about 8 "tumbling toms" at the moment.
Its brilliant just picking them off and popping them into your mouth in the summer and are prolific if looked after.

Yes I agree, they are very productive as long as you feed and water them regularly..I have heard them reccomend three per basket but I only put one in a basket and it does much better.

Another good hanging basket plant is strawberries

I agree with Jack that toms are brilliant but you could also have a go at salad leaf, peas, strawberries etc.

Some herbs would work such as smaller growing ones plus they are a bit more forgiving if you forget to water occasionally. I'm thinking chives, thyme. Mint would need a basket to itself but at least you'd be able to control it.

I agree with whats been said above. Definetly try some tumbling tomatoes in hanging baskets. I usually put two plants in each. If they are quite low you could try lettuces or herbs etc, being lower would make picking easier.

How about trying some peas or mangetout. They grow quite tall and need support but in a hanging basket they could just trail downwards.

I grow my cut and come again lettuces in a hanging basket by my back door.
I've smeared the bracket with copperslip (vaseline would do the trick as well) making the basket completely slugproof.
They get morning sun but afternoon shade there and never bolt.

I tried cucumbers once but they didn't fruit so I tried the little 'melothrie' cuke type things from realseeds. They worked a treat.

Toms, I agree with Bill....one per basket unless, like me, you manage to 'procure' a supermarket shopping basket.
They look quirky and accomodate three tommie plants each

Also, trailing/climbing nasturtiums. They really are delicious, look beautiful and love being in baskets. I put them in with the toms as well as in baskets of their own. If they are in rich compost with toms they make more leaves than flowers...but the leaves taste best of all so that's okay.

I grow a tomato called 100 & 1000s in hanging baskets, very small but so sweet toms and get loads from 2 plants in 1 basket with a basil in the middle.......

I've got tumbling toms, two baskets with 1 plant in each - just found that I'm not tall enough to rech the hanging basket hook though...looks like I'm going to need to get the tools out!

I do Tumbler (not tumbler tom) one per basket and strawberries two per basket.

You would need a very big basket to accommodate more than one Tumbler, even at this watering can be a pain in hot weather but as you can see the results are well worth it.
