I added this onto someone elses thread... and then got no answes.

So when planting 'supermarket specials' do you need to wait for sprouting roots, or just bung them in regardless ?? Got a few awaiting the answer.

Hi Jan, I think it depends on what kind of spuds you've got & when you want to grow them for. If you've bought new potatoes & are hoping to grow them for a crop in late autumn or even Christmas (you need to have somewhere to put your bucket/tubs away from the frost,ie shed or greenhouse)you can keep them in the fridge for a few weeks then take them out & you can let them chit for a while & when the sprouts are an inch or two long plant them up. We've had lots of debates in the past about whether you need to chit or not & I'm not sure if it makes a lot of difference but it makes me feel better to see the little sprouts before I plant the potatoes so I know that at least they're showing signs of life!
