Hi
Further to the advice l offered earlier, l would stick to the fomula offered, and suggest the use of terracotta
pots, they can act just like block storage heater in a sunny location, hence the advice to water in the morning as the day begins to warm, and not in the evening and cool the plants for no good reason,
I shouldn't worry about the gravel at the bottom taking up to much room, the roots will be quite happy there.
Growing in pots is all about balance l suppose, this method brings the three important constituents, water, warmth,
nutrients in to play, and of coarse drainage, thats my two bobs worth
Good luck with your gardening.
kind regards

The use of 'crocks' is obviously going to be contentious I therefore suggest you do a little research of your own before making your mind up which way to go, there's tons of info on the web. A good search is 'perched water table, use in putting greens'.Potty by name Potty by nature.
