As far as I am concerned you can take them at any time.
We thin ours out and eat the small ones, then thin them again later , and leave some up until the end of autumn.
Just pull one and taste it.
If you leave them too long and the tops go green then they become bitter.
Different varieties are different sizes, so I can't comment on what size to pick them.
The longer we leave ours, the more susceptible they seem to be to carrot root fly.Last edited by Nicos; 08-08-2015, 10:19 PM."Nicos, Queen of Gooooogle" and... GYO's own Miss Marple

Have a fertle just underneath the soil (make sure all the soil is put back in place though, and if it feels big enough for what you want it for pull it up,
As Nicos said it can be a good idea to 'do' every other one as it allows the remainders to get bigger.
If the tops (the carroty bits_ are beginning to show above the compost/soil earth them up to stop them going green.I have not failed. I've just found 10,000 ways that won't work. Thomas A. Edison
