  • Can you eat the beans out of large runner pods?

    As the question asks.
Have been away for a while and my scarlet runners have grown very big. Too stringy to eat really. Can you eat the beans from the pods and if so how would you lovely people cook them?

    Thanks for any advice.

Lots of people shell the beans to store & use as pulses for use in stew's or vegetarian meals, depending how many/few you have you could also use them next year as seeds for a new crop

I've got lots, so do I freeze them or is there another alternative?

      Thanks again

If you shell them while the beans inside are still fresh and succulent, like you do with peas or broad beans, you can freeze them. If they are tougher and more mature and the pods have started going thin and leathery, it's probably better to dry them in the pods, and then shell them and keep them in an airtight jar. The dried ones are very popular in Slovakia for soups.

I agree with Zelanina - if they're still fresh eat them or blanche them and freeze them (I froze mine) - but if they've started to dry leave them to dry properly to use as pulses

I remove the strings of beans , and snip them into small lengths..then add them to my curry dishes or get them cooked in just oil with potato, carrot etc mix veg.

Thanks for the ideas everyone. Didn't know they were supposed to be toxic, I sit on the allotment and eat lots of stuff raw:- sweetcorn, peas, runners, broad beans either small, pod and all or pod a few to nibble at also beetroot carrots & peppers, quite an endless list really.
Now I only hope I will be around next season!
