  • Planting garlic now

    Hello all,

I know lots of people are currently planting their garlic cloves for winter.

I have ordered Solent Wight, but having just checked my email confirmation they're not due to be delivered until mid January - will this be too late to plant them out? Will it be too cold? Will the soil be too hard?

    Any advice welcome please!

According to Solent Wight Seed | (2 or 4 Bulbs) :: Products :: The Garlic Farm - for all things garlic

Planted: October to March. (January planting best but will crop well from end of March planting)

Thanks VC - will I be able to get it in the ground in Jan though or am I best planting indoors and moving outside later in the year?

I'm no garlic expert, don't even like the stuff
If you're worried about the ground being frozen in January and you know where you're going to plant it, you could cover that bit of ground with cardboard or summat, to keep the soil a bit softer. Then peel it off when you're ready to plant.

It'll only take you 5 minutes.
            1. Split the garlic into cloves indoors
            2. Put on very warm clothes
            3. Run out into garden, pull back cardboard.
            4. With stick, dibber or gloved finger, poke holes in soil
            5. Insert cloves
            6. Run back indoors and put kettle on

Vixylix, I hope youre not turning into a "fair weather" gardener.

And when your back stops aching,
And your hands begin to harden.
You will find yourself a partner,
In the glory of the garden.

as a northerner, won't you be doing it in a t'shirt? I've been to Leeds on a winter's Friday night...

I'm a southern softie - ordered garlic to stick in now.

Personally I would cancel and get something else. I honestly think that garlic planted in Oct/early November is much bigger.....I know I'm going to get shouted at for saying that but I really don't care!

Are softneck and hardneck garlic planted at different times?
