Hi I bought 3 red delicious fruit trees unfortunately they were delivered when I was away for 2 weeks, they were put in my heated bedroom left in the boxes which are completely dark. They have a little mold and are starting to bud! They did not dry out. I have unwrapped them what should I do with them now. I can store them in my garage which is cold and dark is this a good idea. Any help would be greatly appreciated thanks in advance.

Hello Jeffa & welcome to the vine, As NG says, now is the time to pot up or plant your trees.sigpic“Gorillas are very intelligent, but they don't have to be as delicate as chimps -- they can just smash open the termite nest,”

Whereabouts are you Jeffa?
My instinct would be to plant them whatever and if you can't do that, at least get them heeled in until you can plant.
I'd be a bit concerned at the fact they are throwing buds but I'm not a fruit tree person. We have a few real experts on this and they will no doubt keep you right.

You need to get them in the ground, dont worry about the buds to much as once in you should prune the trees main leader to get new growth the following year, If you want a standard bush shape that is.
Have a look at this vid for Ashridge trees https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7DP5ilmk6z8 and the others in series it show how and where to prune82.6% of people believe any statstic!

Hello thanks for all the help I did not plant them because I was in Spain and unfortunately did not explain to my sister that they should be unwrapped from the boxes... I will repot them into bigger pots and then plant them in the ground when we move house. 2 of the 3 trees are gifts should I tell the recipients to just stick then in the ground straight away? Once again thanks for all the help .
Regards Jeff.
