Help with Herbs

Hi everyone, I'm new to the forum, and also to grading/growing in general so looking for a bit of advice...

I've just started my allotment, at the house, and have 5 raised beds, so far I've planted onions and carrots, with potatoes the next to go in. I've also just put up a plastic greenhouse, and this is where I need some advice. Since it's plastic and not heated I was wondering if it was ok to start herbs in here, or if I should do it in the house first? I've got chives, basil, parsley and coriander seeds, but I'm not sure if they'll just die if I plant them in there. Also, am I best to start them in seed trays, or small pots.

Pinkie, a bit might depend on where you are. If you add your location to your profile, it might help people give you some advice.

That said, I've sown some herbs. They spend the day outdoors and then come in at night, out of the cold.

When you say plastic greenhouse do you mean a 6ftx8ft polycarb type of affair of a 3 or 4 tier cheapy blowaway jobby. If it is the latter I would say have them indoors or leave it a few more weeks if it is the first you should get away with it

Chives, I think, will be okay outdoors or in an unheated greenhouse. They'll get going quicker if you start them indoors but once germinated I'd get them out.

Basil is quite tender so really needs to be indoors on a bright windowsill until at least may.
Parsley will be able to live outside once it gets going but if you're starting from seed, again, indoors until later....actually I think this will be the case for most herbs from seed.

Ideally I'd like to keep everything in there, but if they're not going to germinate I can try starting them off inside and move out once they've got started. It's still a bit cold here. Beginning to wish I'd bought plants not seeds!

I like to start my seeds indoors, usually in a heated propagator. Once I see signs of life, I move them out onto a window sill ad let them grow on a bit. then gradually get them used to being out in the greenhouse, especially this time of year when the nights are still cold.
Its a slow process but it usually works!
