planter advice

I built a coupe of planters today but I dunno how many holes I need to make in the liner for drainage



They are approx 3ft long 1ft wide

I'd also like to know what I could plant in them!
I wanted to try parsnips but have been told they wont be deep enough

Something like two rows of holes six inches apart and six inches between the holes. I think the holes should be at least half an inch diameter.
Parsnips do need quite a depth, at least a foot. How deep are your planters? They look great by the way.

big one is approx 15" small one approx 10" deep

You might get away with the deeper one. However parsnips are in the ground for a long time, using up valuable growing space.

Time I have
This is my first ever gardening project so I dont want to over do things

I have no idea on growing times and what year to plant what. Dobies have an app with a planner that I'm working to at the moment so I can see what I can start on when I get to the new place

Could you start some things off before you move?

A couple of tom plants as they will have to stay indoors for a while yet. How about a few small containers (that you can keep outside now) with radish, spring onions and lettuce etc.

A couple of supermarket flower buckets (called MFB's on here) to start some carrots off?

All of them can then move with you when you go.

Have a look at the seed sowing thread as well as you might get some ideas about things you could have a go at now.

These ae my radishes sown 2 weeks apart in large plant pots.

No real time for that as we are pretty flat out sorting bits for the move
Its surprising how much junk can accumulate in 10 years!!

Sorry Paul, I thought that because you were making planters you were able to start some bits and pieces going.

I know what you mean about the stuff we all collect as we moved mid Nov last year!

I made those at work, old pallets are great sources of timber!!

Did you treat the wood in any way so as to prevent rotting?

I'm not planning on keeping them that long. We get so many pallets and bits of wood I'm sure I'll be making something else in the future

A couple of Tumbling Tom tomato plants with a basil plant in between them in the deeper planter and cut-and-come-again salad in the other. You'd need to keep the tomato plants well fed, I think, but should work well.

These planters are lovely! Well done! I tried building one a couple of years ago, and I didn't finish them they were that poor haha

Got these finished today
Capped the tops



Decided to stain them as it was so cheap



I even gave the underside a couple of coats



Be glad when I can get them home and start to use them
