  • Flies in greenhouse problem or not?

Ok so just sowed some chilli seeds and put in greenhouse and there's a gathering going on with some flies. Will these little blighters cause any issues with my little beauties growing and if so what's best way to get rid without harming the crop? Thanks in advance.

Just took in all of your post....it's getting late to sow chillies. Where abouts are you? Chillies need constant warmth to germinate. Bring them back in, perhaps cover the pot with a little cling film and keep somewhere warm. Kitchen window sil....though airing cupboard would be ideal.

I had quite a few big 'bluebottle'-type flies buzzing around the greenhouse last summer even though it was empty once my seedlings were put outside. They didn't seem to cause any problems or lay eggs anywhere - perhaps they just liked the heat? I was tempted to get a few carnivorous plants but wasn't sure if they would appreciate how warm it gets in there

This year the greenhouse will be full of plants so hopefully it won't be full of swarms of flies too.....they're irritating more than anything else

          Flies

Hopefully no damage and like you say just like the heat of the greenhouse, they're the bluebottle type also. Will just keep an eye out to see if they do anything hopefully they'll just go ad and when. I'm in Southampton and my greenhouse is in direct sunlight all day so figured it would be ok to get some chilli's going in there. I'm a bit late into it as only just got a few weeks back and never grew anything before so it's a case of trial and error at present.

Chillis can be overwintered too though, so even if they don't crop much this year, they'll be strong plants by next year

It might be warm in there during the day but it isn't during the night. You may get some germination but it will be erratic. For good germination of chillies you require a constant temp, best inside on a kitchen window if you want them to germinate faster.
              What varieties have you got?

Some good info here : https://www.southdevonchillifarm.co....chilli-plants/
on required temperature fo chilli seed germination. Nighttime temps of 10-12 just aren't warm enough.

I had an assortment of flies in my walk in blow away last year, caused no problem at all though. Not growing chilli but agree constant warmth will give the plant a better start,I still haven't put my sweet peppers outside at all, they're growing to nicely where they are, plus I always forget about them there's so much to do!
