  • Wild mushrooms growing in a plant pot, what does this say about soil?

    Hey folks,

I'm a newbie gardener so would love some advice. Basically, I have a large plastic plant pot with normal store bought compost which contains a 'patio' Cherry tree inside. Small wild mushrooms keep popping up in this plant pot, does this say something about the soil conditions? Is it detrimental to the Cherry? The Cherry currently looks like it has no problems.

Here's a pic of the pot, it's the large red one:

If it looks like it has no problems...it probably does have no problems.

Does the cherry tree live in a greenhouse?
Nothing to do with your question...I'm just looking at your picture!

I hope so, thank you. Yes, it does

A photo of the fungi would help! Have you added any wood chip or manure to the compost?

I don't have one as I have been pulling it out as soon as I see it growing again. However, next time it comes I'll take a pic of it. No, I haven't added either although in the store bought compost I can feel/see some wood chip in it. Do you think that adding these two myself would help?

Fungi often grows on woodchip and manure - that's why I wondered whether you'd added any to your pot.
I wouldn't worry about it - its just part of decomposition.

Generally means little or nothing. I have noticed that all the compost I have purchased this year appears to only be half way to the compost stage - too many bits of wood and bits that have not composted at all.. I would suspect that some of these have had fungal spores on and that it is these that are growing in your pot.

I have had a few small mushrooms appear on one pot on a window, the other two have shown nothing. All 3 were repotted at the same time with the same mixture.

According to many (all) the botanic programs trees need one (more?) of the fungus species in order to grow anyway. If the fungus was not present then no tree. There is a symbiotic relationship between them.

Oh, that's an interesting observation - I'd imagine you're spot on right there. Apparently the temperate of my greenhouse is perfect for mushroom growing, too. Very knowledgeable, thanks!!
