What needs netting and what doesn't??

Time for me to demonstrate my amateurness!!

What needs netting and what doesn't? And as well as that how long do things need netting for?

We have sprouts on the go which have are now about 6 inches in height and looking good. Courgettes and pumpkins are looking healthy and happy. How long do they need a net above (if at all)??

Also, I have tomatoes in a planter which are looking tall and healthy although no fruit yet. Should they have net over or not?

I personally would net Brassicas to avoid Cabbage White Butterflies from laying their eggs, I would net any fruits that you don't want to be nicked by our flying friends. Everything else I don't bother...........I think.

I agree with netting the brassicas - I also put fine netting/enviromesh over carrots to stop carrot root fly and also put it over leeks and onions because we've had several years when they've been spoiled by Onion fly/allium leaf miner here in Kent.

On the allotment I don't have to cover peas or lettuce, but if I grow any in my garden beds, then I do have to. The sparrers are real pests
