  • What can I plant right now?

OK, my little gardening project fell by the wayside when I got hit by a shedload of paid work - I've barely had time to sleep let alone anything else over the past couple of months - but now the job's finished and I have my kids on holiday...so I thought we'd try again. Most of what was planted got munched by slugs (carrots, lettuce, peas), or bolted (radishes) but we managed to harvest some shallots and there are still some spring onions that I've just thinned out to try and persuade a few a fatten up.

What can I plant now - seeds (I have plenty left) or plugs (might be quicker?) to grow over the remainder of the summer/autumn? Will try to actually remember to mount some slug defences this time!

Also, does it matter that the raised bed seems to be full of woodlice now - they were on the shallots when we pulled them out?

    Thank you!

    You could still sow:

    carrot
    beetroot
    french beans
    leaf beet or chard
    oriental brassicas like Pak Coi
    lettuce
    potatoes (earlies, in containers, sheltered)

As we approach autumn, results become unpredictable, but then the summer has hardly been that!

There are plenty of spring maturing brassicas available as young plants at this time of year - look on the web for the normal seed suppliers.

I've just sown peas (Feltham First, quick growers), onion seed (Keepwell), beetroot, lettuce, pak choi, red mustard, radish, French beans. I reckon I've got another 3 months (just) of warm growing weather, if not sunny

I'm going to be sowing lettuce and spinach seeds every few weeks and I'm also going to plant more potatoes as soon as I've harvested this lot, and I'm also going to sow turnip and tomato seeds when they arrive in the post!
        so,
        lettuce
        spinach
        potatoes
        turnips
tomatoes (I'm planning on growing mine in the house though, so the weather doesn't make much difference to me)

Still time to sow spring cabbage and All Year Round caulis. Garden centres will have Japanese onion sets in soon as well as Garlic and Autumn sown shallots. Broad beans can be sown a bit later to overwinter along with certain pea varieties.

Don't forget the Christmas spuds can be planted now, either in pots to bring into the greenhouse or outdoors in sheltered areas!
