New Build Garden

Looking for some inspiration for anyone with a new build garden. Moved in a couple of months ago, and aside from a couple of pots out the front, as well as our half put up greenhouse, we haven't done much.

Is it worth doing anything at this time of the year? We have a 12 foot wall up the back (sound block) so looking for things which would be good for climbing, as well as some nice hanging baskets. I've googled and been all over Pinterest, but just wondered if anyone would recommend anything in particular? I'm basically wanting it to look like a flowery overgrown haven with colour wildlife rich, but just don't know where to begin!! (I'm also 33 weeks pregnant, so wasn't sure if putting in the effort now for it to pay off next year was best or just to wait until then )

Ooh how exciting! A fresh start, a blank page!

Start with the design - there's loads of books on the subject at the library. Go pour over them (and you get to sit down while doing this!). Get your design down.

Then build all the infrastructure, such as any raised beds, watering points, sheds, patios etc done.

Then... plant! Some can be done now, some can be done late autumn, some early spring (think bare root fruits and trees!), some late spring etc. A little at a time isn't a bad thing Good luck!

I would also try & finish the Greenhouse, you don't want to be chasing your tail in Jan/Feb with a young 'un in tow...................

My folks are just getting to grips with the 'new build garden' in their place... about 16 years after they moved in and over 20 years since it was built. Depending on where you are and how good your builder was, don't be surprised if the soil is rubbish. My folks pulled all sorts of rubbish out of their beds when they formed a new one along the back wall and one along the left hand fence. When they properly dug over the original right hand side and made it a bit wider it was the same - bits of plastic, plastic sheet, plastic pipe, bricks, large stones, glass, metal work... just all sorts that had clearly been dumped in the back garden and covered over with a thin layer of top soil.

Fingers crossed that yours will be better than theirs. I wouldn't be hard to be! As has been said above, i would plan it properly from the off and get the infrastructure sorted now and then do the bulk of the planting later. Adding farmyard manure etc now could be done quite easily - just pile it on top of where you want the beds to be and lets it rot down and get incorporated into the soil. No back breaking digging and it will give the soil a chance to improve between now and when you want to plant up.
