All my tomato plants were dead

Been on holiday and asked my son in law to water my plants which were in pots in the green house, when i came home i couldn't believe they were all dead. All the flowers that were on them had gone, all the leaves were white and very dry and flimsy, if i had known the weather was going to be hot in the uk i would have put them all outside, but my son in law is not a gardener and he didn't know to do this so i cant complain, therefor its my own fault.
Is it too late now to grow some more? I am in Sheffield.

Did he not water them at all? I would have been very upset. I recently went away for 5nights, flooded the GH floor with water, I had some flowers drop off but the plant were healthy on my return.
Its too late (in my opinion) to start again now, especially considering your location.

He said he did water them all every night when he got back from work, he also said he left the greenhouse door open all the time x

Were they in pots? I'm wondering if they had blight? Though white leaves sounds more like sun damage...

Yes they were in large pots, i think it was because of the sun too, not used to it here lol x

Some people think spashing the surface with a cup full of water is watering, others soak the pot until it runs out the bottom.
Theres watering and watering ;-)

No i don't have them anymore.

Poor you, how disappointing. It's a bit too late now to start any more off and I doubt you'll be able to find plants at this time of year. Better luck next year neighbour

Don't know if you've sorted this but most garden centres will have them on offer around now. They look ropey but repot into big pots and give plenty of water and they should produce. Worst case scenario, you'll end up with plenty of seeds for next year

So sorry to hear this, how gutting! There always seems to be a gardening related price to pay for going on holiday! I always lose something.

I think Sappadis's idea is great - and if you can't find tomato plants there are definitely chilli plants and peppers on sale at the moment (and I speak as a fellow inhabitant of Yorkshire).

If you buy red ones, the visual effect will be the same as tomatoes

Problem is, many of the GC plants are F1s so the seeds aren't worth saving - unless you have plenty of room and don't mind what grows!
Chalk it up to experience and plan for next year!
Who knows, if you'd put them outside while you were away, they might have got blight!

All the peppers sweetcorn and everything else I have left on the plot are getting removed and put in our horticulture show on Sunday as going away next week and will be a shame to let it all go to waste
