Whats the best way to link waterbutts? I want to get as much of this rain a s possible in case we get a dry winter. Would one of those fibreglass water storage tanks be better?

Book I read a year or two back, probably by Bob Flowerdew, showed a number of butts at various levels in the garden. They were linked at the bottom, low on the side. Lots of linking stuff in UK plumbers. I would use hose buried about 6" down.
Thing to remember is that all the tops need to be at the same height else, lowest one overflows!

I've got two linked by trailing a hosepipe from the tap of one into the top of the other (through a hedge and several meters away). Cheap and effective as long as the second is lower than the first - when the first one was full it started to syphon into the second one and now they stay at the same level.
Advantage - cheap, quick, easy, no extra kit needed
Disadvantage - can't use the tap on the first butt any more, had to fill the first butt once from the mains to make it workYou are a child of the universe,

My allotment is on a gentle slope and I have water buts down each side twelve foot apart. I have a greenhouse at the top right which will eventually feed the right hand butts through a guttering system. A hen hut at the top left will eventually feed the left hand butts.
Theoretically all I need is for the guttering downcomer to feed the first butt, I will put a hosepipe size hole 6" from the top and run a hosepipe down the fence line to the next butts which will have two holes, an inlet and an outlet at the same height. The bottom but will only have an inlet of course!
The butts should fill in succcession starting from the top, hopefully!
The joint sealing may pose a problem but Ill cross that bridge when I come to it. I have already scrounged all the butts and enough hose for one side. All I need is the hose for the other side, guttering and downcomer for the hen hut. This will hopefully give me a cost-free way of filling all the butts. The beauty of having the butts spaced out down the side of the plot is you dont have to walk as far with the watering can!My Majesty made for him a garden anew in order
