    Hello all

Have just got my own allotment and have never done any gardening at all ever in my 36 years.

I thought I would start with potatoes and bought them all at once. My first earlies have chitted nicely on a window ledge but have not had a chance to put them in yet because i hav only just fertilized will i have to wait two weeks until ,I can plant out ?

My main concern is my second earlies and main crop have sprouted in the garage. I have now put them out in egg boxes, but will I have to throw them away and start again. Since they sprouted in the dark.

I would be grateful for any advice.

    hello! and welcome
You can put spuds in the soil at the same time as muck, so no need to wait.
How badly have the garage ones chitted? You may well be able to use them still-depends on how long the shoots are- up to 3" would still be useable. If they are beyond use ,then be aware that the replacement seed potatoes don't actually need to be chitted (although most of us tend to do that) so they could go straight in too!

I would risk them AV, you might not get so good a harvest but you might not be able to replace them now either (depends where abouts you are).

Move them into the light & in the cool if poss to hold them back a bit.

Oh and Welcome to the Vine I hope you find your answers here

Thanks for the advice. They only have about 1/2 an inch on them. So I will get them in over the next few weekends.

If they are only 1/2" then they are ideal AV. I planted my first earlies today. Wish I'd put the others In now as well

On GW this year they are doing the chitting test. Will be interesting to see the results.

I think they've done this before & it showed no difference. I just think it makes us Gardeners feel as though were doing something

Following on from this thread, I've bought some Maris Peer and some King Edward seed spuds. The Maris Peer are second earlies (?) and the King Edwards are main crop. Should I plant them both at the same time, or the Maris Peers earlier?

Both are just chitting at the moment so I've got some time on my hands...
