  • Bare root raspberry canes

    Hi all,

I've just received some replacement raspberry canes from Marshalls (as last years arrived dead and battered!) - however I'm not going to be at home in daylight now until Saturday - can I stick them in a bucket of water (outside or inside?) until I can plant them on saturday or I do need to find a way to get them planted asap?

    Thanks

I wouldn't leave them standing in water until the weekend. Can you heel them in anyway ? failing that wrap the roots the wet newspaper and a plastic bag then put them somewhere cool but frost free.

Ditto Lardman; I was going to suggest wrapping them in a damp cloth rather than sitting them in water.

Canes are pretty resilient Vixylix, follow the above are just leave in the packing. Mine were fine for 3 weeks!

I had raspberry bare roots at home for two weeks before I could plant out. Heeled them in and kept them in my garage with hopefully no problems...

Sorry for hijacking this thread: I'm intrigued about the advice on putting them somewhere frost free. Do they not tolerate frost well?

I think that relates to the bare roots Snoop, in my experience raspberries are as hard as nails
