  • burdock seeds

hi all ,i fancy making some dandelion and burdock beer this year and wondering if anyone has grown any ? ive never really done any proper foraging so im thinking of growing some on my veggie patch ,have any of you got any plants ? how long does it take to grow ? the seeds look quiet cheap so i think i`ll give it a try , if i plant them this year will i get the roots big enough to make beer with or will i have to wait a few years to get them to the size i need ? any thoughts welcome ,cheers

There is apparently a difference between dock and burdock....

I had a burdock plant in the garden 2 years ago....now i have about 100.... having seen it and had to be near it I would never plant it unless necessary unless you have the space...much better to plant some seeds on some waste land and help wild flowers in thee wild....

You plant it and it grows and looks small a bit like a rounded leaf foxglove with no flowers, the first year you use the roots next year it grows massive and flowers....mine get 1 meter tall, thousands of thistle type flowers that turn to very spikey balls of seeds that stick through your clothes and dont come off, they spread everywhere...
the problems is that when you pull the roots out bits stay behind and grow the next year and if you dont notice..if you even get even 1 flower the garden will be infested for ever more!

Burdock seed heads are a nightmare to get off your clothes or dog's fur. As Starloc says, it spreads easily and its a nightmare to dig out.
useless fact of the day - Burdock was the inspiration for Velcro - that's how much it sticks to you!

I wouldn't put these plants straight in you plot as they're prolific like horseradish. Nothing stopping you putting them in a pot as you'll get all the root out. I've tried shop bought d'n'b and was very nice, as a home brewer I've thought of trying this myself but the beer needs a beer base or you'll end up with a root flavoured watery wash. Good luck.

Try substituting half the water with lidle premium grape juice and boil it with the roots..

Hey big leb, I just googled japanese t*king*w* and I couldn't possibly make a comment based on the interesting returns I got! They are definitely not of a horticultural variety

Who'd have thought that leaving out an O could make such a difference
