  • Will nettles smother quicks?

I'm putting in a new 60m hedge at the back in a few weeks. About half of thatvis damp ground that grows a lot of nettles every year. I'm getting free white thorn quicks that are quite small. Will they survive the nettles? It's the roots I'm concerned about.

Nettles are really easy to pull out of the ground, just wear arm length gloves & goggles.............

I don't really know, but I do know that nettles grow fast and tall and their roots spread in a thick mass, so I'm guessing they would out-compete the white-thorn.

Is it possible to dig out all the nettle roots before planting? I was digging some out in my garden a couple of days ago and they are tough but not very deep. I needed to wear gloves though, because they are starting to sprout and even small nettles sting.

I would mulch, probably with some kind of membrane of at least brown cardboard or a thick layer of newspaper and then woodchip or compost and grass clippings. That will exclude the light and give the hedge a year or two head start.

Fresh or rotted grass clippings? I'll have plenty of those so that won't be a problem. Now if geese ate nettles I'd be sorted.

Yes fresh or rotten will do. It's to keep moisture in and light out.
