  • Pop up greenhouse

    Hello
I'm pretty new to this brilliant forum and gardening.
I recently bought pop up greenhouse at wilko Wilko Pop Up Greenhouse at wilko.com I wonder when I could move my seed out to greenhouse ? I live in London, weather is getting nicer however I don't want to rush and kill off what I managed to grow so far which are basil, chilli, beans, peas, courgettes and pumpkin. It's all sprouting nicely. Thanks

Hello Anna & welcome to the jungle, have you got the blowaway well pinned down before it...........well, blowsaway. Beans & Peas should be ok, too cold yet for Chillis, Cougettes & pumpkins. I don't know about herbs.

Basil is a mediterranean (sp?) plant - it won't like the cold. Although it feels warm now it still drops overnight and an overnight ground frost won't do them any favours.

As BM said the peas and beans should be fine - but make sure you harden them off before moving anything from indoors to outdoors

I understand through my own trial and error, the pitfalls of plastic greenhouse. I would recommend you find a way to hold the pop up greenhouse down, either one house bricks on all four sides. or you have a good chance of wandering around your patio retrieving the pop up and up-righting the plant pots and contents tipped over, as any wind will take the pop up for a walk. I once tried coat hangers bent in a n shape, but the plastic tore after the sun had baked it, as does happen with plastic greenhouses.

          another thought,
On any day that has high sun levels the pop up will get very warm and if it is windy and cold (too cold to open the door flap) the plants will be damaged by the heat.... Here's a fact I learned.... a plant will reduce growth with low temperatures, but also will cease to function correctly and even have a "check" stop growing if it gets too hot.

So remember to lift the front cover.

I was reading up on tomato plants and discovered that fact which surprised me because up to then I had assumed the warmer the better.

If you still have the greenhouse boxed and a receipt and you can get a wooden and plastic cold frame for a little more cost that may prove a bit better.

Before you spray a single thing,
sit down and read the silent spring.

Buy, Buy a cold frame !!!!!!

Find someone who is having their windows replaced, and ask them for some opening vents and make one.

Note the Recycled Airbrick vents on the sides, only difference I would make if building this again is I would make the slope a little steeper so the rain did not pond on the bottom of the PVC-U frame.

Either way is certainly more sturdy than a pop up.... but if you can get your money back and make one then brill!
